The story of the Pharisee and Tax Collector who both went to the temple to pray is instructive to the 21st century Pharisee…like me! The Pharisee was not a legalist because he gives credit for his righteous behavior properly to God. Not only did he do what was required by the law, he played it safe by doing even more. Yet, Jesus says that he did not go home justified. Apparently, the Pharisee put confidence in the fruit of God’s work in him and concluded that he was, therefore, righteous before God. Suddenly passages like Romans 3:21-31, for example, make sense to a modern-day Pharisee like me.
